Techincal Theatre Putting On A Play
We are putting on a small play at the moment and I wanted to give you some ideas as to what goes into the design of a production from a technical view. A lot of people only watch a show without realising what goes on behind the scenes to put that play to a professional level of being able to perform it to audience. Over the coming week I am going to be concentrating on showing you the elements that go into the production of a play. If there is anything you would especially like to know or have any questions please leave me a comment so I can answer your questions.
Our play is based around “Britain’s Got Talent” though it is our version of it and will only be inspired by the program. We need eye catching lighting and design one that makes an individual stop and look at the performance. It is live entertainment although it will just be the audition process and interviews we need a set design that will be eye catching. In our scenario people waiting to audition will be on the floor for a certain amount of time chatting to each other and being interviewed. In a sense we need basic lighting with the main emphasis being on the contestants as they audition.
Theatrical lighting is needed to fade in and out of scenes. In terms of what we need the set for we will need entrances and exits for the contestants and also interviewees. We will also need raised platforms for when the contestants perform. We don’t need any lavish props apart from microphone’s and basic equipment for the interviewees. Perhaps a make up brush, a drum set or piano. We want to keep it as basic as possible as to where props will go.
Because we are going for realism we want an over the top, large set that will bring attention to the naturalistic effects. The set doesn’t have to do everything as long as lighting, sound and costume are in place. If we could have a small room for contestants as they wait achieved by using lighting changes and not set changes. We want subtle light changes nothing too dramatic. If we can build extra lighting positions in the set then that would be good.
We can have a song playing before the play starts as the audience is entering. If we have a stereo on stage for contestants to use if they are going to sing or want some music on when they perform then that would be best or we could put a speaker on the stage and route the music around it. I personally think that it would be best if we could have both that way we have some control over music plus the other group has some control over the music played during the introductory scenes and ending. We will need sound effects such as claps, boos and cheers. We need voice over’s to depict the thoughts of the interviewer.
A single microphone on the stage will be adequate for contestants auditioning.
