Light’s, Camera, Action!
Carrying on from yesterdays subject stage lighting I thought I would talk some more about lighting. Stage lighting has several functions, but there are no set rules as to how you can use lighting otherwise it would limit the artistic effect.
Lighting can be used to show what is happening on the stage. The purpose of lighting is to show the action of what is happening on the stage. If lighting were not used then the audience wouldn’t be able to follow the action.
Lighting can alter the perception of shapes on stage especially three-dimensional stage elements.
Lighting can draw a person’s focus to an area of the stage or distract them from another.Lighting can be used to reflect emotions from harsh red light or pale blues.
Lighting can be used to reflect what time of day it is. By using blues for night time or orange for sunrise. Gobos can project a sunset, moon etc. There are many reasons and uses for lighting and the list is not exclusive. Stage lighting is an artistic expression that can be used to reflect many different types of feelings and emotions. There is no right or wrong way to use lighting everyone does it differently.
